Living History and Storytelling in Primary Schools.
09/Mar/17All our Living History workshops have been up and running since January and Melissa is really enjoying dressing up both herself and some of the children in local schools. I have included a photograph of some of the props we use to bring the Anglo Saxons to life. It is so exciting to be able to allow the children hands-on experience of these resources and as I’m sure you can imagine, the workshops are great fun as well as being informative.
Alongside Living History, we are focusing on storytelling this term. We have enough puppets for every student to work one each, including some of our larger creations. My favourite part of storytelling is where the children can make changes to a traditional tale as it’s a great way to understand structure. It is also very special when they can create their own stories to perform with the puppets. Once again, our fully interactive approach can be a delightful way of learning within this part of the curriculum. We also have our own puppet stories that celebrate different cultures, diversity, working together and friendship. Once again it is the children who bring the tale to life with a little help from us.

I sent a letter to schools across Berkshire recently in the hope that it would nudge some schools who usually book us and haven't done so yet for this term and to introduce other schools to our work. It took a long time to get the email addresses organised and to make sure my email was polite, informative and easy to read. Imagine my sadness when the only reply I received that afternoon, was one word from a primary school in Wokingham - unsubscribe. I'm wondering if it is a swamped receptionist sending it, in which case a teacher wouldn't have even been given a choice of seeing the message. It is very disheartening when our wish is to share the magic of puppetry ans drama with as many children and young people as possible, but how do we reach them when staff are too busy to even see our email? The following day was more positive with a couple of inquiries, but mainly we seem to gain bookings through repeat schools and word of mouth. If anyone has any ideas of another way - I'm up for hearing about them.
